BorgMate is free software under the GPL-3.0 and stays that way. Registration is a way to pay for work you find useful — nothing is locked behind it.

What registration gives you

  • Your name in the About window: Registered to your name.
  • No more reminders in the app.
  • One year of updates from the day the key is issued.

You get a registration key by email. Enter it in the app under Support BorgMate or About. The key is verified offline — the app never contacts this website about your registration, and there is no account, no activation, and no hardware binding.

Questions

BorgMate is GPL-3.0. Why pay?

Because the GPL grants you every right already, and the work still has to be paid for. BorgMate is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0, the source is public, and every copy is fully licensed whether it is registered or not. Registration is optional support: it buys a name in the About window, no reminders, and a year of updates.

Is an unregistered copy limited in any way?

No. There is no trial, no feature gating, no nag screen at startup, and no expiry. An unregistered copy does everything a registered one does. The only difference is an occasional reminder after a successful backup.

What happens when the update year ends?

Nothing stops working. Your registration stays valid, the app keeps running, and newer releases still install — the update window simply notes that the release is newer than the year you paid for.

Which edition do I need?

Personal if you are backing up your own machines, business if BorgMate is used at work. Both are the same application; the edition is recorded in the key and shown in the About window.
